The expertise of the Ruiz-Agudo group consist of understanding the crystallization of highly diverse mineral systems to avoid, enhance or control their formation to develop advanced sustainable materials. Even though crystallization processes are ubiquitous and relevant in several applications, the underlying mechanisms remain mostly unclear. Obtaining deeper insights into the stages involved in the formation of solid crystalline materials from their basic building units (i.e. atoms, ions, molecules) are essential for engineering advanced sustainable materials. By combining and developing state of the art methodologies, unravelling the formation mechanisms of a wide range of solid crystalline materials from solution is the main focus of our group.
